Inspirational Quotes

Love them (“You are Stronger than you think”) or hate them (“I want to punch your inspirational quote in the face”) inspirational quotes are one of the most liked and shared post types across social media. For example on Pinterest, you can search and filter through thousands of quotes based on your current mood, from happy to sad and everything in between.

So as a small business is it a good idea to post inspirational quotes on your social media channels?

The answer is yes when done correctly inspirational quote posts can both increase brand awareness and target your ideal customer.

Tips for posting inspirational Quotes

  • Inspirational quotes should be styled consistently. By using your own photos, brand colours, hashtags, logo or website address you are reinforcing your brand’s image with every quote you post.
  • Find a quote that will support your brand and it’s purpose. For example, a good quote for a wedding cake bakery would be “Love is Sweet” with an image of one of the bakery’s wedding cakes in the background.
  • Don’t over-rely on inspirational quotes to get your message across. Use your quotes sparingly, and mix them in with a variety of other content so that your followers don’t get annoyed.

Creating Inspirational Quote Posts using PicMonkey

There are plenty of free online tools available for making inspirational quotes but I prefer using PicMonkey as it allows you to design your quote from scratch.

In the below tutorial, I’ve designed an inspirational quote to promote my local area as a tourist destination. I’ve used a recent photograph that my brother took at Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo of some big wave surfing featuring Benjamin Sanchis and I applied a hashtag used to promote the local area #SligoWhoKnew.

  • 1. Create your Canvas

Go the PicMonkey website and hover over the Design option in the menu bar and click on Custom size:

Enter your custom canvas size, I’ve chosen 1080 x 1080 pixels as this is the ideal size for an Instagram post:

  • 2. Add a Background Image

You have now made your quote canvas and arrive at the Basic Edits screen. Firstly, close the Canvas Color option as we are using an image background instead of a colour and then select the Overlays option from the left-hand side toolbar:

On the Overlays screen, you can add your own brand image that you will be using as a background for your inspirational quote. You can upload an image from your computer, My Hub, Facebook, OneDrive, Dropbox or Flickr:

Once your image has been added to the screen, you can resize it to fit the whole canvas, fade it slightly so that the quote’s font will be easier to read and flatten the image so that it becomes your quote background:

  • 3. Insert your Inspirational Quote

Once you have completed your image background the next step is to add your quote.

Click on the Text option on the left-hand menu and select which type of font you want to use for your quote. When you’ve chosen a font click Add Text.

Type your quote in the text box and from here you can change the font type, colour, size and positioning:

  • 4. Brand your Quote

The next step is to add your branding. For this quote, I’m using a text hashtag but you could also add a website address or even a logo using the overlay option.

If adding small branding text, or if your quote is too hard to read, you can firstly add a Geometric Overlay to the background in order to highlight the text.

Select the Overlays option from the left-hand side menu and click on Geometric. I’ve gone for a rectangular overlay here which can be resized, edited and positioned to your specifications:

When your overlay has been added you can then click on the Text option on the left-hand side menu and select which font type you want to use for your branding message. Once you have added your text and edited it to reflect your branding you can reposition it over the highlighting rectangle as below:

You are now ready to save your inspirational quote by clicking on save in the top menu!

  • 5. Save & Publish

After clicking on the Save option you can now download your masterpiece to your computer or upload it to OneDrive or Dropbox. I recommend going for the highest quality image available and keeping the dimensions of 1080 x1080 px for Instagram:

Congratulations, you’re now ready to post your inspirational quote to social media!
